Bias in Algorithms

Algorithmic bias is something that is definitely a pressing issue however, not so far gone that it can not be changed in my opinion. To my understanding, algorithmic bias is something that is repeatable errors in a computer system that make questionable unfair outcomes. Like choosing one group of people over another because that how the artificial intelligence was programed.

I was very intrigued by Joy Buolamwini's story and what she had to go through to get where she is now. I had known some of the same patterns such as hers however, I didn't make it serious until I watched her Ted Talk. A synopsis of what happened was because of the color of Joy’s skin facial recognition did not pick up on her face in any manner. She was fairly dark skin but even in my case, I am way lighter than her, and yet due to the color of my skin, I have had the same problems in the past. This is very concerning to me, to say the least.

As stated previously that this definitely a pressing issue however, not so far gone that it can not be changed. I believe with a little work of having a more diverse operating system will help change the game of the industry. Not just for people of color but everyone else as well. It should not stop there either, make it to where a name on an online hiring application has a different race besides white should not interfere with the hiring process. If said person is qualified for the position, they should have an equal chance to get that position. Overall loved learning about what algorithmic bias was and how we can improve.
